Quite often, when we envision high-quality performing arts, we associate the idea with large cities. They often have both the venues and the resources to bring the talent to the area for the very best concerts, shows, and various performances. However, if you visit the quaint mountain town of Franklin, North Carolina, you’ll find that the stereotype has been broken!
In 2009, the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts (SMCPA) of Franklin first opened its doors and almost immediately began booking outstanding performances. So many great names have graced the stage over the last 14 years including Kenny Rogers, Little Big Town, Lee Greenwood & Louise Mandrell, Guy Penrod & Lynda Randle, Martina McBride, and the list goes on. This 1,500-seat state-of-the-art performance hall has also showcased classics such as the Nutcracker Ballet, performed by the Russian Ballet Company.
In addition to bringing amazing talent to the area, SMPCA has also partnered with the Overlook Theatre Company, a local organization that performs a variety of professional quality shows throughout the year. Last year, the high point of their performance schedule at SMPCA was a fabulous production of the original Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast. This year, after dazzling audiences with Seussical the Musical and Bye Bye Birdie, the theatre company will perform The Wizard of Oz in the fall, likely to packed houses each night.
