Rotary, founded in 1905 in Chicago, IL began “so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful lifelong friendships.” Over time, Rotary has evolved into one of the largest and most impactful service organizations in the world. Rotary currently has more than 1.4 million members worldwide, logs approximately 47 million volunteer hours annually, and awarded $333 million to global service initiatives last year alone.
Rotary in Franklin, NC
Currently, two of the nearly 50,000 Rotary Clubs around the world are located right here in Franklin, North Carolina. The Rotary Club of Franklin, founded in 1927, meets at 12:00 PM on Tuesdays at Grace United Methodist Church. The Rotary Club of Franklin Daybreak, founded in 1997, and meets at 7:30 AM on Tuesdays at the Angel Medical Center Cafeteria.
Over a Century of Giving
Over the last 118 years, Rotary clubs around the world have achieved a great deal for humanitarian causes. Rotary’s focus has always been on giving back to others and the community. Local clubs create initiatives like scholarship programs and volunteer groups. Additionally, they participate in Rotary International projects. Project include focus on eradicating polio, providing medical services in impoverished countries, and promoting peace through exchange programs. Franklin’s two clubs currently offer numerous opportunities to give back. For example, programs are in the areas of youth service, community service, vocational, and international. One of their outstanding programs is the Youth Leadership Academy. This is a program in which young people discover their own unique leadership skills and develop new ones.
Rotary founder Paul Harris once said, “Whatever Rotary may mean to us, to the world it will be known by the results it achieves.” Among others, organizations like Rotary are a huge part of what makes Franklin, NC such a wonderful place to live.
