Winter recreation includes skiing in Western North Carolina

For those who live in the northern regions of the U.S., winter recreation opportunities are a bit limited. Winter in the north is universally recognized as the time of year to stay inside. Everyone knows that venturing out could get you stuck in trouble. An impassable snow bank, skidding across ice-coated asphalt, or steering through a blizzard with practically zero line of sight! But as much as we may love curling up on the couch in front of a cozy fireplace with our favorite blanket and a hot drink, sometimes you just want to be able to walk outside. And, without putting on 7 layers of clothing, for crying out loud!

Winter in Western North Carolina

We’re excited to tell you that you don’t have to go to Florida in order to enjoy the outdoors between November and March. Nestled in the southeastern United States, just north of the famous tropical peninsula, the elevation rises and expands into the vast beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. They extend along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, right in the heart in Western North Carolina. In this region, the winters are mild, but the higher elevations still enough snow to make for some great winter recreation.

Slopes and Tours

Multiple WNC resorts and recreation areas offer opportunities from beginner to advanced for snowboarding, snow tubing, and skiing. Cataloochee Ski Area and Wolf Ridge Ski Resort are just a couple of the renowned winter recreation options in the region. If you prefer to enjoy your recreation activities in the air, then check out the Asheville Zipline Canopy Tours or the Asheville Treetops Adventure Park. You’ll find yourself soaring through the treetops or traversing aerial trails with some of the most outstanding views you can find. Speaking of fantastic views, hiking in Western North Carolina offers some of the best when the leaves are off the trees. Plus, the trails are usually much less crowded in the winter months. This creates a serene opportunity to experience some of the most undisturbed landscapes in the country.

Conclusion

It’s safe to say that winters here are definitely not as gloomy. No need to “stay inside or else” that you might experience just a few states to the north. In fact, venturing outside during a WNC winter might just be one of the most fun and exciting things you do all year. Residents of Franklin and other nearby towns have first-hand access to all of these winter adventures and more. Sanctuary Village is the perfect place to plant some year-round roots and indulge in all the region has to offer!
