Gem Mining in Franklin, NC

Gem mining in Franklin, NC

Since the 1800s, the secluded mountains of Western North Carolina have been known for the exquisite gems that can be found in their mines. Gem mining in Franklin began after rubies and sapphires were first discovered in the region.

Multiple gem mining companies took an interest and began searching for the primary source of the gems that were coming out of the mines. After decades of searching to no avail, the mining companies gave up and moved out of the area. To this day, the source of the gems remains a mystery, but the search is still on!

Macon County, North Carolina is home to numerous gem mines that are open to the public. Those interested in trying their hand at gem mining can choose between “salted” and “unsalted” mines. When gems have been placed in the soil and miners are guaranteed a find are, those are “salted.”

Unsalted Mines

“Unsalted” mines and in their natural state. Most mines provide individual buckets or bags of dirt for purchase. Some unsalted mines offer visitors the opportunity to dig their own buckets of dirt from the gem-rich soil on site. Some of the largest, most valuable gems in the region have been discovered in these unsalted mines!

Whether the dirt comes from a pre-filled bucket or a hard day’s labor shoveling away, the process of uncovering the gems always leads to water. Miners provided with a screen and seated along a flume. By placing small amounts of dirt on the screen and allowing the water to wash the dirt away, miners are then able to search through what remains and hopefully find some gems.

Local gem and jewelry shops can provide an analysis of any gems found and even use them to create a memorable piece of custom jewelry!
