Spring Break in WNC

Spring flowers in bloom in Western North Carolina

Since the early 1900s, Spring Breakers have been flocking to sandy beaches for wild parties under the tropical sun. First inspired by early movies depicting these “fun in the sun” excursions, this trend has been carried forward into the modern day by many vacationers. Also, college students, of course! In fact, it’s become so popular that it’s almost too popular. An estimated 570,000 students crowded onto the beaches of Florida last year to celebrate this Spring Break tradition. But with all of the chaos of the modern, tropical Spring Break experience, where does that leave the families, sweethearts, retirees, and other folks who want to enjoy a March vacation without being trampled by a herd of beer-soaked college students?

Western North Carolina offers the perfect Spring Break experience for those who are looking for fun in the sun, sans the chaos!

Hikes in WNC

There are over 2,500 hiking trails in North Carolina, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to more than 150 of them. Clingman’s Dome is one of the most popular in the state, offering outstanding views of the National Park with only a moderate 1.3-mile hike to the observation tower. If you’re looking for some quieter, less-known hiking experiences, head a little south to Franklin, NC where you will find the Rufus Morgan Trail, Wayah Bald, and the trails around Standing Indian Campground. Trails range from beginner to advanced.

Waterfalls

While you’re exploring the mountains of WNC, you’re almost certain to come across a few waterfalls. On the scenic drive to Highlands, NC, be sure to stop off at Dry Falls. Don’t be fooled by the name; it’s anything but dry! In fact, you should be prepared to get at least a little wet. Follow the 0.4-mile trail as it takes you safely behind the 75-foot waterfall and out the other side, breathtaking!

Lastly, we would be remiss if we didn’t take the time to mention the WNC Nature Center. Located in a quiet area of Asheville, this zoo features 60 species of wildlife that are native to the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Exhibits include the black bear, red fox, gray wolf, river otter, white-tailed deer, and timber rattlesnake.
