In Franklin, North Carolina, Fall celebrations can be found every weekend and around every corner during the month of October. The leaves are changing, the colder weather has created an air of excitement, and everyone is ready to enjoy our favorite season in the mountains. But, of all the celebrations and traditions for Autumn in the mountains of Western North Carolina, the most famous of them all is undoubtedly PumpkinFest! This family-friendly event has been attracting visitors to Franklin for the past 26 years, and on Saturday, October 21, the 27th Annual PumpkinFest will take place on Main Street in Downtown.
Food
This event boasts a wide variety of warm, decadent, and unique fall treats at various restaurants and vendor booths. Last year, one vendor served the most delicious, authentic Gyros, while another served warm apple dumplings with a homemade whipped cream topping, creating a wonderfully gooey fall dessert that was devoured by the spoonful. And if you’re feeling adventurous as the day goes on, Gracious Plates On Main has a limited-time menu of fall-inspired cocktails you won’t find anywhere else.
Vendors
If this year is on par with last year, which of course it will be, then there won’t be a single regional craft, work of art, or piece of handmade jewelry that you can’t find as you meander through the vendor tents along Main Street. Christmas shopping could easily be completed just at this one event, and all the while, you’ll be supporting local and small businesses as you choose special items for your friends and family.
World Famous Pumpkin Roll
The Pumpkin Roll is one of the most noteworthy traditions of Franklin’s PumpkinFest. Hundreds of spectators gather as competitors roll their pumpkin of choice down the long slope of Phillips Street, hoping that their pumpkin will be the one that goes the distance. The winner receives an award and bragging rights for the remainder of the year. This event is open to all ages and always attracts a crowd. But don’t get too close to the edge of the road, or you might find yourself dodging a pumpkin as it bounces its way down Phillips Street!
This event starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, so make sure you grab your friends and family as you make your way downtown this weekend!
