Multigenerational Homes are Beneficial, But Are They Realistic?

Multigenerational homes are a growing trend in today’s modern culture, with ~20% of Americans currently choosing this living option. The term refers to a house in which more than one generation of a family lives together under the same roof. It may include parents living in the same home with their children and perhaps even grandchildren, as well. This particular form of housing comes with a handful of benefits for the entire family.

Affordability

Choosing to live in a multigenerational home offers the economic benefit of shared costs. The tale of breadwinners working so many hours that they miss out on family time is a story that can be changed in a multigenerational home. The cost of living for each generation in the household can be reduced dramatically when the household expenses are shared by everyone, thus allowing individuals the choice to work less and enjoy more family time.

Family Bonds

Living together under the same roof offers more opportunities for family members to engage with each other regularly. Grandparents may cook meals with their grandchildren, adult sons might complete repairs around the house with their fathers, and everyone may come together in the evening to make popcorn and watch a movie.

Safety

Aging individuals reach the stage in life when they need assistance to complete daily tasks. Living in the same home with their adult children is a wonderful alternative to assisted living facilities. This option allows older parents to maintain their independence while having their adult children close by to assist with the parent’s needs and respond quickly in the case of a fall or other emergency.

Beyond simply the benefits of the family living together, there are safety and security benefits of a tight-knit community.

Is Multigenerational Living Feasible?

The benefits of multigenerational living are very enticing. But, the idea still leaves a lingering question to consider: Can multiple generations really live together comfortably under one roof?

The answer is: Yes, if the home is designed with multigenerational living in mind.

At Sanctuary Village we offer architect-designed homes that are both cozy and yet spacious at the same time. Two homes we currently have available, the Balsam Gap and the Blue Ridge, offer three levels of living space with open-concept layouts. Both homes have wide front porches on the main level and separate, private entrances on the lower level. The Balsam Gap has the primary bedroom on the main level. It also has its own private lower level with ground access. This design would be ideal for a multigenerational family. This design offers privacy and convenience for everyone.
